Pope Sixtus V excavated in 1587 to remove the obelisks and in the 19th century a gas works was built on the site. After this, the building was abandoned until the 12th century when it was fortified by the Frangipani family.
They continued past the fall of Rome, the last official chariot race at the Circus Maximus was in 549 CE held by Totila, the Ostrogoth king AD.
Races were held regularly from the early days of the Republic – at least 60 times a year, not including special occasions.
